JumboCode

JumboCode is a entirely student-led organization at Tufts that builds software solutions for Boston-based nonprofits, free of charge! Every year, the executive board (eboard) puts together around 10 teams of students that each work on their own project. The club had 185 members by my senior year of undergrad.

Teams are composed of a Project Manager (PM), a Tech Lead (TL), a designer, and about 10 developers. While PMs are busy putting together tickets and interfacing with the client, TLs are hard at work reviewing code and fielding technical questions from their developers. Designers are tasked with designing all parts of the website to fulfill their client's requirements, and developers make their vision come to life using industry standard frameworks and libraries.

I think JumboCode is an awesome organization for so many reasons. Not only does it provide nonprofits with software that can completely change how they operate, but it also gives Tufts students some much needed real world web development and leadership experience. I encourage you to learn more about it here.

My Involvement

My freshman year of undergrad I was a developer on the Animal Aid project, which built a website to pair up students with local dogs that needed to be walked based on their schedules and dog preferences.

My sophomore year I was the tech lead on the TUPIT project, which built an admin portal to track graduation requirements for incarcerated and formerly incarcerated individuals working towards a degree through the TUPIT program.

My junior year I was the org's Head of Engineering on the eboard, a position that runs workshops to help developers learn web development skills, squash some of the toughest bugs that devs are having trouble with, and recommend technologies to PMs and TLs when planning their projects.

Then finally my senior year I was the Vice President on the eboard, a position created to assist the President while they were working abroad and to assist in orchestrating JumboHack, which was Tufts' first hackathon following COVID.
